Modernizing investment data collection
Engineering Experience · Investment management
Turning a fragmented collection process into a connected web application, built around the way the investment business actually worked.
The challenge
Investment information arrived through spreadsheets, Access forms, PDF files, and email. Collection and transfer depended on separate tools rather than a single connected workflow. The new application needed to fit the existing portfolio-management system and the people who supplied and used its data.
Understanding the workflow
Nick worked with business stakeholders and leadership to understand the collection process, what users needed, and where the existing approach caused difficulty. That business knowledge informed the application requirements and the connection to the internal system.
What was built
Nick designed and developed a web-based collection portal and its supporting database, taking the work from requirements through production. The portal connected collected information to the existing portfolio-management system, bringing application development, database design, and integration into one solution.
Working within the environment
The work took place alongside established applications and a small internal technology team. The portal had to support the business’s collection workflow while connecting to the systems already used to manage portfolio information.
What changed
Data gathering and integration became a connected web-based workflow. Multiple manual collection and transfer steps were replaced, and the business gained a more centralized way to collect and use investment information.
- Scattered collection tools
- Web portal + database
- Portfolio-management system
Making reporting more dependable
Consulting experience · Legal services
Connecting the calculations inside reports with business expectations, while defining a practical direction for the wider data environment.
The challenge
The business needed to understand whether its reports calculated what people expected them to calculate. Supporting data was spread across systems, report definitions needed documentation, and leadership needed a clearer view of the people, tools, and practices required for a more developed data platform.
Tracing the logic
Nick examined reporting calculations and documented their technical definitions. Working with technology, operations, finance, and business stakeholders, he surfaced discrepancies between existing logic and business expectations so that the business could review and decide how those measures should work.
Improving the foundation
The engagement included Power BI report and visualization improvements, new data pipelines and API connections, and centralized SQL data supporting reporting. It also introduced a development-and-release process for BI work, connecting immediate reporting needs with improvements to the supporting environment.
Planning the next stage
Nick produced a one-year data strategy covering governance, common terminology, technology recommendations, team structure, staffing, and operating practices. The roadmap gave leadership a way to consider the broader investment alongside the technical improvements already delivered.
What changed
The business received clearer documentation of reporting logic, visibility into calculation discrepancies, improved reporting and supporting integrations, and a one-year roadmap for its data goals.
- Business expectations + report logic
- Investigation + targeted improvements
- Documented definitions + roadmap
Building the teams behind business growth
Leadership experience · Home improvement
Developing dedicated Enterprise Data and ERP Technology departments as business growth increased the range and complexity of technology needs.
The challenge
The business needed more than individual technical fixes. Finance and accounting required dedicated systems support, while data needs expanded from business intelligence toward enterprise-wide platforms and services. The organization needed teams, leadership, and structure that could support that broader scope.
Building the departments
Nick built the Enterprise Data and ERP Technology departments, hiring internal staff and coordinating contractors and vendors. As responsibilities grew, he shaped teams around the work: database operations, data engineering, reporting and analytics, and support for ERP systems and related business applications.
Developing leaders
Nick developed people into team-lead and management roles, distributing responsibility as the departments grew. He involved team members in the design of their departments and worked across onshore, nearshore, and offshore resources to support a changing mix of operational work and major implementations.
Connecting teams to strategy
Alongside department leadership, Nick designed and executed a multiyear technology strategy, managed budgets and vendors, and worked with business and technology leadership on architecture and priorities. The role combined executive communication with hands-on technical involvement as business needs and leadership priorities changed.
What changed
Dedicated Enterprise Data and ERP Technology departments supported a broader range of business needs. Team members progressed into leadership roles, and the organization gained specialist capacity across data platforms, reporting, ERP systems, and related applications.
- Growing business needs
- Teams + leaders + technology strategy
- Dedicated data and ERP capabilities
Designing a modern investment-management platform
Engineering Experience · Investment management
Designing a replacement portfolio-management application, database architecture, and migration process to address a broader range of business needs.
The challenge
The existing portfolio-management application needed a new version as the business expanded into additional asset classes. Supporting that change required a deeper understanding of how different departments worked, what information they managed, and how those needs should fit together in a shared system.
Learning the business
Nick worked across departments to gather requirements and understand investment structures, reporting needs, and operating processes. That business knowledge shaped the redesign, helping translate requirements from different teams into an application and data structure suited to the wider investment scope.
Designing the application
Nick designed the replacement portfolio-management application and its database architecture, built the migration process, and wrote initial code for navigation functionality. The design brought requirements from different departments into a shared application and data structure intended to address the business’s expanding needs.
Organizing delivery
As the rebuild became a larger focus, Nick hired and led developers to take on day-to-day work. He made application-architecture and work-assignment decisions and introduced Agile practices and continuous integration and delivery to help organize software and reporting development.
What changed
The work established the application design, process documentation, CI/CD process, initial code base for functionality, database architecture, and migration process for the planned replacement. These contributions provided a foundation for further development and broader business capabilities and insights that would outlive Nick's time at the company.
- Broader investment requirements
- Application + data redesign
- Support for additional business needs
